Shootouts and Overtime Determine Final Matchup
Sharks and Stingers To Play for the Championship

By Mark Ducharme

The South Coastal Hockey League Fall Season semifinals had everything you could want and a great deal more. The Sharks needed to win a shootout and the Stingers used overtime to advance to the league championship game on New Year's Day. The Stingers won the season series between the two teams as they won the first two games and the Sharks won the third and final game of the regular season.
The Stingers, who were last in the league playoffs in the Spring of 2014 got two goals from Pembroke's Scott Kelly including the game winner in the second overtime to give them a come from behind 2-1 win.

Mark Frano of Pembroke played a great game in goal for the Stingers and was helped by some key defensive plays. Mike Evans followed up a Mike Simon shot with a rebound goal in the first period to give the Crusaders the lead.

Daron Jacobs of Pembroke scored the Sharks' second goal of the shootout to give them a 2-1 win in the extra session and a 3-2 win over the Toros. Sharks' goalie Greg Smith of Hanover stopped 30 shots in the win.

Mike Purdy and Tom Piepenbrink scored for the Whalers while Dan Newcomb scored two goals for the Saints in their consolation game 2-2 tie.
